When Heidi Houston went to her doctor for a regular check up he told her she didn’t really need her period anymore and she could stop it altogether by simply skipping the sugar pills. What he did not say was that it would throw her into menopause.
Heidi was less than thrilled about this and found herself dealing with a host of unpleasant menopause symptoms including fatigue, hot flashes, depression, loss of memory and many other things that left her confused and her family tip toeing around her.
However, being the inquisitive woman that she is, Heidi was not content to stay in that condition so she began searching for answers, and then solutions.
She visited various doctors for over three years, getting nowhere in her quest to restore her body to it’s renewed self, before finally attending an event where she heard a female doctor speak about menopause and everything the doctor said intrigued her. It was more than just medications and cliché responses, it was in depth, knowledge based and positive information designed to empower women to prosper physically and mentally during the years that many women are giving up and slowing down.
Heidi knew she had to set an appointment with this doctor but was dismayed to learn she was booked out for four months. Determined, Heidi approached the doctor and said “If you will see me sooner, I will make a documentary about the things you have said, including your knowledge and research.” The doctor, not really believing that Heidi would go to such lengths as to make a documentary on menopause, agreed to see her the following week.
Within seventy two hours of her visit, which included important testing and a patch to help balance her hormones, she was feeling better than she had in eight years. Her son noticed the improvement as well, saying to her “Mom, I don’t know where you have been but I am so glad you are back!”
Intent on keeping her word, Heidi then set out to make that documentary. Fueled by a passion to encourage and educate women and an understanding that it is difficult for the average woman, especially the impoverished one, to get the answers and help she needs to overcome the many painful and depressing symptoms of menopause. Heidi set out to raise money, gather a film crew and start the process with no knowledge and no experience in film making.
Well thank the good Lord she did! Hot Flash Havoc is a real, relevant and refreshing approach to dealing with menopause and is straight forward and hilarious. The film interviews real women and their families who are open, honest and real about their own personal experiences in dealing with menopause and serves to set women on the path to education and success in approaching their health in these years. It also showcases the many different methods used successfully by women with the help of a great doctor including proper diet and exercise as well as hormone therapy.
Heidi is also quick to point out that once a woman is passed her child bearing years, she should change doctors and find one that specializes in woman who are approaching and in the menopause stage in life.
This film is truly inspiring and encourages not just women, but their families to get involved in helping women they love.
The film will begin previewing in select cities this summer. PinkDivaCafe encourages all women to visit the website and request that the movie premier in your
