The gorgeous white tops seen at Oscar de la Renta and Chloe for Spring/Summer ’10, have seriously forced me to re-think the concept of the basic white shirt. With this season’s ruffles, bows and tailored cuts this time-tested classic is anything but basic.
Making the most of this garment boils down to cut, details, and balance. Here is a simple guide for selecting this stylish wardrobe staple, and working it into your day-to-day looks.
Cut. A simple white shirt with a tailored cut is the timeless foundation for quintessential style. Darts and seaming are a must for a stream-lined appearance, so be sure to note the construction of the garment when shopping. Bust darts will ensure a flattering fit across the chest, while seams along the torso allow the fabric to lay flat against the bodyline for a clean finish.
White blouses that are cut to drape have a looser fit, but still require appropriate seaming to control the fabric for a flattering fit. Always try these styles on before buying to ensure the fabric drapes across your figure, giving a soft appearance that doesn’t add bulk.
